The Fenton Gallery’s will present an exhibition of new paintings by Ita Freeney this March.

Ita Freeney, graduated from Crawford College of Art and Design in 1994 and
has since exhibited consistently throughout the country,. She originally
moved to Cork from Dublin to attend art college here. Now she divides her
time between working from her Backwater artist’s studio, and working in the
Fenton Gallery which is located within the same complex. Solo exhibitions of
her work have included “New Paintings”, Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick, 2002 and “Strata” at the Paul Kane Gallery, Dublin, 2001. It has been several years since such a large body of her work has been seen in Cork. This is an interesting exhibition for the artist both in terms of artistic development and also because the exhibition space at the Fenton Gallery is so well known to her. Her work is held in collections such as the Crawford Municipal Art Gallery, the Department of Finance, the Office of Public Works, and the Dental Hospital, Dublin.

This new work represents a shift in direction, and has evolved over a
period of three years. The inspiration has for the most part changed away
from landscape towards urban or architectural concerns (her immediate
surroundings). Although the inspiration has changed, she finds herself
still drawn to the same elements - empty space, quietness, subtle colour,
and tone. The works are still about the essence of places. Mood and
atmosphere have always been central to her painting but exist alongside her
need for a formal minimal aesthetic. Perhaps more importantly than the
change in inspiration, are the formal changes - the appearance of forms,
rectangular shapes, and the concentration on their placement.
