The paintings of Deirdre O’Brien are known for their use of a strong rich pallette of reds and oranges. In this series of paintings, the artist is interested in the drama of threatening swings and changes in the weather, “when heavy cloud is alleviated by intense brightness”.
There is often a sense of distance in these works perhaps steming from her liking of the open Australian landscape which she has travelled through and painted previously. The paintings in this exhibition are inspired by being in places by the “Waterside” – lakes and the sea around Ireland and England - places where there is more of a focus on the elements. The paint application in these paintings also has a sense of being weathered and this is especially the case in the large works, where the paint and colour envelop you in the atmosphere.
Deirdre O’Brien is a Cork artist, a graduate of Crawford College of Art and Design and a member of the Backwater Artists studios. Previous exhibitions have included a solo exhibition in the Paul Kane Gallery, Dublin in 2006 and a two person exhibition at the Fenton Gallery in 2002. Her work is included in the collection of AIB, Microsoft Ireland, OPW and UCC.
